Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs

The CSUB Division of Student Affairs is dedicated to cultivating the intellectual and personal potential of every CSUB student, through programs, services, and co-curricular activities that are essential to student success. While serving students through meaningful experiences and enhancing the community united through diversity, we inspire students to become informed, active and engaged global citizens in a complex, rapidly changing world.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) provides vision and leadership for all of the units that comprise the Division of Student Affairs. The Office of the VPSA provides central budget direction and support to offices and departments in the division. In addition, the Office of the VPSA is responsible for the Student Affairs Graduate Student Leadership Program; Student Development Grants; the Campus Beautification Project; and provides administrative support to the University Ombudsperson for Students; important partnerships and collaborations with Bakersfield College and a wide variety of other important activities that promote student success, retention, graduation, and career fulfillment.

Associated Students, Inc. (ASI)

The Associated Students California State University, Bakersfield, Incorporated (ASI) exists to provide an official voice through which students’ opinions and issues may be expressed regarding university and statewide affairs. ASI seeks to assist in the protection of the rights and interests of individual students and the student body as a whole. ASI provides resources and programs that encourage leadership development and broaden social, educational, political, and cultural awareness for the betterment of the students.

Campus Programming

Campus Programming prides itself in being the heart of campus life for all `Runners at CSUB. We promote active and informed engagement through traditional, innovative, educational, cultural, and social programs. Campus Programming also generates leadership opportunities that nurture the personal and professional development of our students. We achieve this through a variety of diverse programs, collaborative efforts, and leadership opportunities that enhance the overall student experience. Through signature programs such as `Runner Nights Carnival and Concert, Homecoming, Rowdy Run, Sensational Sophomores Leadership Program, Brown Bag Discussions, International Education Week, and First-Generation Celebration, Campus Programming creates an engaging, fun, and educational environment at CSUB.

Care Services

The purpose of Care Services is to provide a coordinated assessment and response to any students of concern. These efforts consist of, but are not limited to, connections to various campus and community resources and case management/follow-up. Care Services promote students’ physical and mental well-being while seeking to retain students who can be successful when issues are assessed, behaviors are addressed, and concerns are taken care of. The collaborative approach among the individuals represented on the Care team allows for such proactive management.

Center for Career Education and Community Engagement (CECE)

The Center for Career Education and Community Engagement (CECE) serves as a bridge for the employment and community engagement interests of CSUB students, the larger CSUB community, employers, and community organizations. CECE is  CSUB’s central hub for full-time and part-time employment, internships, and volunteer opportunities for students. CECE also coordinates and supports the vast majority of Service Learning activities that are a part of the curriculum at CSUB. By providing events and programs, CECE facilitates recruiting relationships with employers and community organizations and helps students prepare for career success and on-going community engagement.

Counseling Center

The mission of the California State University, Bakersfield Counseling Center is to assist a diverse student population with personal development, academic, and mental health concerns that may affect them as they pursue their educational goals. The focus is on improving students’ well-being through individual counseling, groups, workshops, and programs. CSUB Athletics

CSUB Athletics provides a transformative educational environment through four pillars: academic excellence, outstanding student-athlete experience, competitive success, and community engagement. The Roadrunners compete in NCAA Division I across six men's sports (baseball, basketball, outdoor track & field, soccer, swimming & diving, and wrestling) and ten women's sports (basketball, cross country, golf, beach volleyball, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, indoor and outdoor track & field, and indoor volleyball).

Outside of competition, the Athletics Department utilizes the Kegley Center for Student Success to aid the academic pursuits of all `Runners. CSUB student-athletes also regularly benefit from the `Runner Ready Program, which provides life skills and career development resources with initiatives like Backpacks to Briefcases and the Scholar-Athlete Leadership Academy.

CSUB Dining Services and Catering

The mission of CSUB Campus Dining is to enrich and nourish lives by providing a world class dining experience. The `Runner Café, Panda Express and Starbucks (in the Student Union), Walter’s (in the Library), Bento Sushi (in the Science III Building) & The `Runner Express are dining options on the CSUB campus. Days and hours for all locations vary. There are also a variety of Food Trucks on the Red Brick Road Monday-Thursday.

CSUB Catering provides affordable and delicious catering services to the entire campus community and has an extensive menu that is certain to meet the needs of all entities on campus.

CSUB-Antelope Valley (AV) Student Life Center

The Student Life Center in the Antelope Valley incorporates aspects on campus beyond academics, including activities, clubs, social events, and organizations. Along with the Student Life Advancement Committee (SLAC) and campus clubs, the Student Life Center helps create a sense of community on campus through planning and organizing of campus events and activities for CSUB AV, fostering a well-rounded college experience. SLAC also provides oversight for funding of club events and helps assess student concerns at the AV campus. Currently enrolled students are able to join SLAC to contribute to campus life, meet diverse people, gain leadership skills, and build lasting friendships. New and existing student clubs can get guidance on hosting events, submitting SLAC fund requests, and engaging their fellow students.

Department of Campus Recreation and Wellbeing

The Department of Campus Recreation and Wellbeing offers a variety of student-funded,

student-driven programs, services, and facilities for the CSUB community to achieve wellbeing, personal development, and life-long learning. The Student Recreation Center (SRC) is a state-of-the-art facility that includes a 35’ rock climbing wall, 60+ cardiovascular machines (treadmills, ellipticals, stair steppers, stationary bikes, and rowers), selectorized and plate loaded weight machines, Olympic lifting platforms, free weights, and a high intensity interval training (HIIT) area. The SRC has a 3-court gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, badminton, pickleball, and indoor soccer and a 1/10-mile indoor track. In addition, there are also beach volleyball courts, a lit field, and a high ropes challenge course. The Wellness Suite located on the 2nd floor offers nap pods, massage chairs, and a meditation area, as well a craft supplies to assist students in resting, relaxing, and recharging.

The department offers a variety of programming for many different interests. Wellness workshops are offered throughout the semester with fun activities that focus on dimensions of wellness such as physical, emotional, and social. Daily group fitness classes such as yoga, dance, and cycling are offered in our studio rooms. Personal training and small group training are offered as a more individualized approach to instruction. Group bike rides include excursions around campus and to local spots in the community. Members of the CSUB community can also check out a free bike for day use through our bike share program. Intramural sports offer leagues and tournaments such as soccer, flag football, and basketball—create your own team or join a current one. The Outdoor Adventure program offers daytrips or overnights traveling around California and includes activities such as kayaking, camping, rock climbing, and snowboarding. All fee-paying SRC students have access to the SRC and the programs offered.

Excel Scholars

The mission of Excel Scholars is to increase the retention, engagement, graduation, and overall success of undergraduate men of color.  This is accomplished through outreach, mentoring, academic support, and personal development programs and activities. The Excel Scholars Program consists of:

  • First-Year Mentoring Program that aims to support the successful transition and holistic development of first-year students. Students are paired with dedicated CSUB faculty or staff members who will provide guidance and support to help them achieve their educational, professional, and personal goals.
  • CSUB 1029: First-Year Seminar Course that provides students with an engaged, supportive environment in which they can make connections with a cohort of students, their instructor, and key members of the campus community who can help ensure their academic success.
  • Monthly workshop topics to help students develop their sense of belonging/purpose, exposure to campus resources, connection to peers, and engagement in professional opportunities (i.e. summer research, graduate school/career fairs).
  • Excel Scholars Club strives to build a brotherhood that promotes involvement and inclusion in leadership activities, both on campus and in the community.

Excel Scholars is open to all CSUB students who would like to participate, and does not consider sex, gender, or any other protected status in the application or selection process.

Multicultural Alliance and Gender Equity Center (MAGEC)

The Multicultural Alliance and Gender Equity Center (MAGEC) is a unit within Student Affairs that strives to uplift, validate, embrace, and support students of all cultural backgrounds, religious beliefs, gender identities, and sexual orientations. MAGEC offers a welcoming, nondiscriminatory space where students can build community and connect with peers who share similar interests.

The center houses several student support programs and provides a variety of resources, including a computer lab, study rooms and communal lounge areas, three club rooms, and a dedicated lactation room. Students also have access to Jai’s Library, which houses a collection of books on gender identity, sexual orientation, and social justice. Additional resources include a textbook rental program, Rowdy’s Care Clothing Closet, a prayer and meditation space, and a snack area equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and more to support students' everyday needs.

New Student and Family Programs

New Student and Family Programs consists of introductory informational programs for students and their families. New Student Orientation is an exciting part of transitioning to college life and an important part of becoming a student at CSU Bakersfield. Orientation provides students with the opportunity to explore the academic, career-based, cultural, and social opportunities on campus and within the ‘runner community. CSU Bakersfield strives to provide a robust, focused, informative, and engaging orientation program for incoming new students to help them navigate their new school, satisfy academic expectations, access resources and services, and thrive. Orientation is a mandatory, two-step process for all incoming students. The orientation fee is non-refundable and is separate from and in addition to other deposits, registration fees, and tuition.   

The New Student and Family Programs department strives to promote community engagement and keep parents involved and engaged throughout their student's academic career. Parent involvement plays a key role in student success and our goal is to make it convenient for parents to stay informed and connected. From a comprehensive orientation to quarterly university updates and invitations to exciting activities and events—parents will never miss out on opportunities available to their students at CSU Bakersfield.

Project Rebound

Project Rebound supports the success of formerly incarcerated people by offering the opportunity and resources needed to transition and acclimate to a college campus successfully. Project Rebound creates a safe space where students can prepare for university life. Navigating academic and campus obstacles can be tricky. We connect Rebound Scholars to peer navigators who are current students with lived experience who have overcome obstacles and are succeeding on campus. They serve as the first point of contact for Rebound Scholars once they are enrolled in classes. The single goal of our peer mentors is to support students in accomplishing their goals.

Rebound Scholars are serious about higher learning and motivated to move their lives in this challenging new direction We strive to set our students up for success. To support their success, we host various professional and personal development events that address the unique needs of system-impacted students. These events are hosted in partnership with campus partners and community organizations, covering a variety of subjects. Our goal for our students is that once they graduate, they are equipped with academic knowledge and ready to excel in the community and their chosen profession.

The Center for Accessibility and Essential Needs ensures higher education is accessible to all students, regardless of their background or circumstances. Student Health Services (SHS)

The Mission of the Student Health Services (SHS) is to build a healthy campus community by providing quality, caring, affordable, and inclusive healthcare and health promotion services that foster academic success and student development. By actively partnering with our patients, SHS strives to create an environment in which students learn the skills to enhance their health and wellness and advocate for their own health needs.

BASIC SERVICES: Student Health Services provides basic, out-patient medical services for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and subacute conditions, illnesses and injuries. Student fees support the facility and provide many basic services - available at little or no cost. These include:

  • Medical evaluation and consultation for individual health problems
  • Health behavior change counseling (nutrition, smoking cessation, etc.)
  • Programs in health education
  • Contraception and family planning counseling
  • Laboratory tests needed to evaluate many acute problems
  • First aid for injuries on campus
  • X-Ray referrals
  • Telehealth appointments 

For those services not covered by the mandatory student fee, a charge is assessed based on the cost to provide the service. Generally, the cost at Student Health Services is far lower than the charges assessed off campus. These augmented services include:

  • Medications
  • Physical examinations
  • Medication abortion
  • Immunizations
  • Extended University Students
  • Summer visits (check our website to learn more)

Student Housing And Residence Life

The CSUB Office of Student Housing and Residence Life is committed to the academic success of its students as well as their intellectual and personal development. The Office of Student Involvement enhances the quality of the student experience by facilitating meaningful student engagement and leadership development, and by supporting inclusive co-curricular opportunities that expose students to campus programs, activities, and organizations in a student-centered environment.

CSUB is home to a growing number of recognized student organizations that cater to students' social, cultural, and academic interests, including local and nationally recognized fraternities and sororities.

CSUB Dreamers Resource Center

The CSUB Dreamers Resource Center (DRC) is committed to supporting undocumented students, AB 540 recipients, DACA recipients, and students from mixed-status families. The center provides guidance on immigration-related concerns and connects individuals with appropriate resources. Immigration attorneys are available by appointment several times each month to provide free legal assistance to CSUB students, staff, faculty, and their immediate family members.

The center also offers support with DACA renewals, AB 540 applications, the California Dream Act Application (CADAA), and other services to help students thrive during their time at CSUB.

Veterans Success Center

The Veterans Success Center is responsible for working with the CSU community and the Veterans Administration to ensure certified military connected students are receiving their benefits. The Veteran Success Center provides on-campus resources to the veteran community and participates in student engagement activities throughout the academic year.

Veterans are given priority admission status, although they must meet the same admission criteria established for all students. Eligible veterans who attend California State University, Bakersfield may receive all appropriate educational benefits. California State University, Bakersfield is approved as a degree-granting institution for the attendance of veterans under Title 38, United States Code. This includes the programs covered in Chapters 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 1606, 1607, and Harry W. Colmery (Forever G.I. Bill). GI Bill is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  CSUB is also approved for the attendance of California veterans’ dependents under the State Fee Waiver program. Veterans who plan to enroll in the college and need assistance with their education benefits are urged to contact the Veterans Success Center. Veterans who do not meet the regular admissions criteria may apply for a hardship consideration. The Office of the Registrar will assess all military educational training and experience for applicability to your chosen educational program. Credit is awarded based on recommendations provided by the American Council on Education (ACE). Veterans seeking a military credit evaluation should submit a DD214, member 4 (separation papers), DD295 (evaluation of military experience), or a Joint Services Transcript. Veterans are provided priority registration appointments during the registration period.
